Tourism in Dubai is an important part of the Dubai government's strategy to maintain the flow of foreign cash into the emirate. Dubai's lure for tourists is based mainly on shopping, but also on its possession of other ancient and modern attractions.
Dubai is the most populous emirate of the seven emirates of United Arab Emirates. It is distinct from other members of the UAE in that revenues from petroleum and natural gas account for only 6% of its gross domestic product. A majority of the emirate's revenues are from the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZ) and now, increasingly, from tourism.
Having expanded along both banks of the Creek, Dubai is divided into two parts - Deira on the northern side and Bur Dubai to the south, as well as the top tourist destination of Jumeirah.
Abras, the traditional water taxis, are regularly used each day to cross people over to either side of the Creek. Each side has its share of fine mosques and busy souqs, public buildings, shopping malls, hotels, office towers, banks, hospitals, schools, apartments and villas. Dubai is blessed with golden sunshine and silvery beaches, world-class golf facilities and an upcoming Sports City.

Dubai enjoys an arid subtropical climate, with blue skies and sunshine all year round. The hottest months are between June and September, when temperatures can soar to 113F (45C) and more during the day and humidity levels are very high. Even the sea temperature touches on 104F (40C) during the summer months, and swimming pools at hotels are usually cooled to be refreshing. Temperatures are only slightly more moderate the rest of the year, the coolest time being between December and March. There is very little rainfall in Dubai, but when showers do fall it is mainly in the cooler months.

Dubai Stadt liegt am Nordrand des Emirats Dubai und wird geteilt durch den Dubai Creek, der entgegen der weitverbreiteten Meinung kein Fluss ist, sondern eine 100 bis 1300 Meter breite und ca. 14 Kilometer lange Bucht des Persischen Golfs. Früher befanden sich hier die damals unabhängigen Städte Daira auf der Nord- und Bur Dubai auf der Südseite. Brücken befinden sich nur etwas abseits vom Ortskern; Fußgänger werden mit kleinen Personenfähren (Abras) auf die andere Seite transportiert (siehe Nahverkehr).
Die Stadt erstreckt sich vor allem nach Süden entlang des Strandes von Dschumaira und der Scheich-Zayid-Straße, da Dubai im Norden direkt an Schardscha grenzt. Im jenseits der Grenze liegenden Schardscha wohnen wegen der günstigeren Mieten viele der in Dubai beschäftigten Arbeitnehmer.
